Travellers often feel compelled to buy their car hire excess insurance from the rental company on arrival as they pick up their car, which is usually from £17 a day*, with 83% not realising they could purchase it from another supplier and over two thirds (71%) not knowing that this insurance is significantly more expensive than they could buy elsewhere (YouGov research 2011*).

“By the time people have a week’s break in February, a week at Easter and perhaps two weeks in the summer, they could well have spent over £400 on excess car hire insurance if they buy it from the car rental company compared with buying a one off annual policy from £39.99 with iCarhireinsurance.com,” said Ernesto Suarez, CEO and founder of iCarhireinsurance.com.

“We don’t begrudge sales staff at car rental desks trying to earn commission selling excess car hire insurance but we do begrudge the exorbitant cost, which is on average over 80% (see Table 1 below) more than buying the insurance direct from iCarhireinsurance.com. We recommend you put your hard earned cash to better use and have a free holiday in the autumn instead with the £400 saved.”

Many customers are unaware, until they collect their hire car, that in the event of damage or theft, even if it’s not their fault, they are liable for excess charges of up to £2000. At this point, unless they purchase excess protection from the rental-desk, they are left exposed. These policies are usually expensive, approximately £17 a day (see Table 1) and limited in scope.

Ernesto Suarez, CEO and founder of iCarhireinsurance.com, said: “Even a small chip on a windscreen or a scratch down the side of the car can leave people liable for hundreds of pounds if they don’t have an excess insurance policy. Our advice is simple – buy before you fly – to get the best excess car hire cover, at the most economical price and put the money saved towards another holiday.”

iCarhireinsurance.com’s excess insurance also protects vulnerable parts of the rental vehicle that are usually excluded by the rental companies’ policies.
As well as annual policies from £39.99, iCarhireinsurance.com also offers daily cover from £2.99.
Key Benefits of Stand-Alone Car Hire Excess Policies:

Annual or Daily cover

Protect yourself against excess charges for damage and theft

If you are thinking I want to sell my car then your next thought will probably be how do I sell my car?

The car industry today is a minefield for any private individual wanting to sell their car. Where do you list it or advertise it, do I sell privately or to a dealer, how much is it worth, what if they want to take it for a test drive (are they insured), do I need to pay the finance off, how do I take payment and the questions go on and on.

You first decision must be how much are you willing to sell it for, setting your price too high will deter potential buyers before they even pick up the phone to you, setting it too low may mean you have missed out on a few extra hundred pounds…where’s the middle ground, this is something you need to know before committing your money to any advertising. This of course is only a problem if you are selling your car privately. Selling to the trade is a different story. There are many companies around that will make you an offer on your car, this doesn’t cost you anything and although the price you receive may be slightly less than what you would get if you sold privately it will probably compare favourably to the sort of offers you may get if you were part exchanging your car.

With private selling you have to tolerate all the tyre kickers and time wasters and then probably re-advertise it at a cheaper price anyway. At least selling to the trade, the offer you get over phone or via a web site is normally what they will pay when they collect the car or you drop it off. Providing you have been honest in the description of the car there should be no reason for the trader to reduce their offer. It is hassle free as well, the dealer will complete all the necessary checks, they will have trade insurance should they want to take a test drive in it and they will settle any outstanding finance for you with the balance being paid directly to you.

I'm married with three children, I enjoy Football (soccer), Rubgy League and Cars. I have recently started writing a few articles on various subjects that interest me.

1. Re: Insurance4carhire Mar 02, 2011, 7:45 AM Have a look here:
Aug 11, 2010, 6:15 PM
Before leaving for Ireland, we purchased the SCDW through insurance4carhire.com. We had an accident and were charged the deductible (approx $1700) by Murrays/Sixt (don’t get me started on the terrible experience we had with them re. the accident and follow up- they were HORRIBLE).

Once we were able to get the accident report from Sixt (a month later- again, don’t get me started)- Insurance4carhire wired the money to our bank account within hours of receiving the necessary documents. They were easy to contact, always prompt in their replies, and sent our money very quickly.

When I was researching them I had a hard time finding anyone who had actually had a claim – so wanted to let others know of the good service we received. The only down side is that you must pay the charges ($1700) and wait to be reimbursed. We knew this going in so were prepared – just not expecting the lack of service received from Sixt.

If you want to get a van with the opportunity of up to 5 years contract available, then van leasing is perfect for you. Van leasing is a method of financing your vehicle, which is very tax efficient. You are basically going to pay for the van monthly or on every three months, but you will also have to deposit a small amount on the day you first take up your van.

When it comes to VAT, it is much better if you are registered, because if you are then the company will pay your VAT monthly and eventually take it back, but quarterly. However if you are not registered, then you will have to pay your VET every month as normally follows. Because of the leasing company you will get full repayments against the taxable profits.

Once your usage time has over you, by contract, are obliged to sell your vehicle, because if you don’t do so you won’t get your tax refunded, which excludes the point of leasing the van at the first point. At first selling the van may seem easy, but you would have to find a person on which you should sell it to. However you will be negotiating the price and you will keep about ninety-five percent of the profit, as the other five percent you would have to return to the company. Normally after getting the amount of money, you could use them to buy your new van, but you can do everything you want with the money you have earned by selling the van.

You have other options too, though. For example you can choose instead of selling the van to renew it, which means you are going to get a new van, for the old one. And this is a thing you could not only do at the end of the deal, but any time you want. You just have to request the new van and make a settlement with the leasing company, regarding the financial differences, between the new and the old van. It is also called part exchange, as you can also exchange certain parts of the van, but it will cost you much more, it you choose to partly renew it, than to renew the whole van. However everything depends on the agreements. The financial differences will be calculated and the new dealer would have to pay the financial company five percent of the money he got by the sale of the part exchanging of the vehicles.

So it is up to you to decide what you will do with the vehicle once the terms have been completed, but it would be only one of the three options. The third option is to keep the old vehicle to you, without selling it, or changing it for a new one. Then you would have to request a further rental figure, which allows you to keep the vehicle on agreed terms up to a further two more years.

There are three great ways of getting a vehicle. It doesn't matter if it is for business or personal use, to take a van you must buy, rent or lease it.

There are three great ways of getting a vehicle. It doesn’t matter if it is for business or personal use, to take a van you must buy, rent or lease it. The first option that you have means that when you give your money for the vehicle it becomes completely yours. But that means that all the taxes included would also be paid by you. Moreover if you need it just for a little while or few years, then there is no really big point in buying it, because you will end up selling it, without any profit.

The second option you have is renting. There you pay to use the vehicle for a certain period of time. But when renting it, you have only one option – of using the vehicle for a very small period of time, it could be from few days, to few weeks.

The third option is the best one. It is called van leasing. In van leasing you get the vehicle you want for a long period of time, and depending on the company you make contract with, you could end up with your money you gave away for tax and VET back.

However, like in the other two options, you have to be very careful when choosing the leasing company and the van dealer. When choosing a dealer and a van you must negotiate as much as you can in order for the offer to fit best to you and your expectations. When choosing a leasing company to sign a contract with you must make thorough research regarding it, and choose the most suitable contract for you, that the company has to offer.

Also you must look out for the small details in the contract like damage fees and the flexibility of the time period of usage of the van. You must be really careful when reading the contract, because once it is inked, you will be obliged by the law, to take up to your end of the deal.

Van leasing is the best choice you have, if you want to take a van, even if you want it for personal use, but by far it is especially the greatest choice when it comes to business. By using van leasing you have different options, when the deal has finished, depending on the signed contract. In some cases you may be legally obliged to sell your vehicle, in others just to return it to the leasing company, but in every case you should be very careful when using the van, because any damage caused on it will take you on with damage fees. Also you must be very certain of your choice of van, because in most cases you don’t have the chance of changing it for other. However some companies offer van renewal after a certain period of usage of the van and for a small fee. At the end of the deal you will be very happy that you haven’t bought a van instead of leasing it, because you leasing it would have cost you a much lower amount of money.
